What your detailer didn't tell you about ceramic coatings (the honest version)

Car Care 101: what a ceramic coating's hydrophobics actually are, why they matter for your car, and what a coating won't do. No hype, just straight answers.

That water running off in one ribbon in the clip above is SystemX Phantom, a professional-grade ceramic coating we installed, doing its job. Here's what's really happening, why it matters for your car, and, just as important, what a coating won't do. 🌺

Hydrophobic = "water-fearing"

On a hydrophobic surface, water holds onto itself more than it holds onto the paint, so it pulls together and leaves.

Scientists measure this with the contact angle, the angle a water droplet makes where it meets the surface:

Surface Typical contact angle
Hydrophobic (the definition) Over 90°
Superhydrophobic (think lotus leaf) Over 150°
Bare clear coat About 70–90°
Cured SiO₂ ceramic coating About 100–115°

The clear coat and ceramic numbers are approximate. They vary by product and condition, and the 90° and 150° cutoffs are conventions. A cured ceramic layer lowers the surface energy of the paint, so water grips it less. It pulls together and slides off.

That's sheeting, not beading

What you see in the clip is sheeting: the water leaves together as one ribbon, and the paint behind it is left nearly dry. Beads form where a little water stays behind. Both are hydrophobic behavior, and neither one on its own proves how well a surface is protected.

Not all coatings are equal

Water behavior and lifespan vary because coatings differ in:

  • Chemistry: SiO₂, SiC blends, different resins
  • Thickness and cure: how much film builds, and how well it cures
  • Prep and maintenance: paint correction before, safe washing after

What hydrophobic actually gets you

  • Water and grime release. Rain and rinse water help carry road grime and dirt off.
  • Much easier washes. Less scrubbing, and less scrubbing can mean fewer wash swirls.
  • Help against UV and oxidation. It's an added layer over your clear coat that helps slow the faded, flat look.
  • A sacrificial layer against fallout. Salty ocean air (or vog, if you're in the islands), bird droppings and sap are easier to remove. Still clean them off promptly.
  • Gloss that holds up longer between washes.
  • Bonus: a glass coating (a separate product from a paint coating) helps rain bead up and fly off your windshield, especially at speed, so you may need your wipers less. We offer VUE glass coating as an add-on with Stout.

Picture two identical cars, washed the same way. Over time, the coated one tends to hold its gloss and depth better and stays easier to clean, as long as it's maintained. The other can start looking faded and flat sooner.

The honest version: what a coating WON'T do

  • It's not scratch-proof. SystemX rates Phantom at 9H pencil hardness. That's a lab test, not a scratch-proof promise.
  • It's not invincible. Bird droppings and water spots can still mark it. They're just easier to remove, so clean droppings off promptly.
  • It doesn't replace washing. It still needs proper, gentle washes.

A coating lowers the risk. It doesn't erase it.
