Keep your car nice without a big budget: it needs a routine

Car Care 101: a simple budget detailing kit and a weekly and monthly routine that keeps your car looking good. Habits beat expensive products.

Car Care 101 title card: A nice car doesn't need a big budget. It needs a routine.

You don't need a garage full of fancy bottles. Most of what keeps a car looking good is a few cheap basics used the right way, over and over. 🌺

The honest truth: habits beat expensive products

  • Wash safely, wash often. The right technique protects your paint more than any pricey bottle.
  • Protect with something simple. A basic spray sealant goes a long way between washes.
  • Stay ahead of the inside. Five minutes a week beats a big cleanup later.

The budget kit

Wash basics

  1. Two buckets + a grit guard. One for soap, one to rinse your mitt. It keeps grit off your paint.
  2. pH-neutral car shampoo. Not dish soap. Dish soap can strip wax and sealants.
  3. A microfiber wash mitt. Gentler than a sponge, which traps grit and drags it.

Dry, protect, tidy

  1. A plush microfiber drying towel. Skip old bath towels and paper towels.
  2. A budget SiO₂ spray. Like the ~$26 one from our reel. It's not a ceramic coating, but it gives real slickness and beading.
  3. Interior wipes + any vacuum. Handheld, wet/dry vac or the gas-station one all work.

Ballpark for the whole kit, not counting a vacuum: roughly $100–150. Prices vary, and most of it lasts for months.

The weekly reset (every 1–2 weeks)

  • Two-bucket wash, out of the sun. Early morning or evening, so soap doesn't dry on hot paint.
  • Quick interior reset. Trash out, shake the mats, wipe the wheel, shifter and door handles.
  • Spot-clean bird droppings fast. Don't let them sit. They can etch your clear coat.

The monthly extras

  • Top up your SiO₂ spray. Right after a wash, on clean, dry paint.
  • Full vacuum, mats out. Seats, carpet, trunk. Yes, all that beach sand.
  • Wheels + tires. Use a separate brush. Never your paint mitt.

Skip these and save money

  • Automatic brush washes. Fast and cheap, but the brushes can leave swirl marks that cost real money to fix.
  • Dish soap and paper towels. They can strip your protection, and paper can scratch.
  • "Miracle" bottles. If it promises forever-shine in one wipe, be skeptical.

Save this for your next wash day
